Record your baseline first
Record current settings and choose a location and repeatable action for comparison. Changing everything at once makes it difficult to identify what improved the experience.
Prioritise stability during movement
Start from a preset suited to your machine and repeat a short route. Watch for stutter during camera turns and entry into dense foliage rather than judging only stationary FPS. There is no single optimal preset for every system.
- If the image is blurry, review resolution and any scaling/upscaling options available in your build.
- Change one setting, repeat the test, then keep or revert it.
- Avoid reducing detail so far that terrain becomes hard to read.
Keep game audio intelligible
Balance game audio and voice chat using footsteps and ambience. Choose a comfortable listening level rather than maximising every channel to detect opponents. Check the selected output device after connecting a headset.
Bind controls for reliable use
Check feeding, drinking, resting, scent and species-specific abilities. Practise taps and holds according to prompts before danger arises. If two actions are easy to confuse, rebind one and practise it in a low-risk area.
Separate local performance from connection issues
Record when stutter occurs, displayed ping and whether it repeats on another server. These observations narrow the problem without proving its cause. Change one group of settings per trial so results remain comparable.
