Overview and gameplay loop
Scout from above. Keep stamina in reserve.
Pteranodon suits scouting and foraging through short flights. Identify the landing bank, takeoff route and resting place in advance; collect food while you still have stamina to spare. On the ground, prioritize an early departure over a prolonged fight.
+Vision and mobility
+Easy disengagement
+Finds teammates and zones quickly
−Extremely fragile
−Zero stamina is fatal
−Landing and takeoff need space
Special abilities and controls
Verified against the current ability set in patch 0.21.772. Shown keys are defaults; players with custom binds should check Settings → Controls.
Combat and unique abilities
Press three times to take off; repeated flaps gain altitude but consume stamina.
Slow before reaching a tree or wall, then hold RMB to latch. Stamina can recover while the bar remains above roughly 20%.
Skim your beak through a fish school, keep your body parallel to the surface and release RMB after catching a fish.
Roll in flight to avoid a collision or change direction quickly.
Perform a lunging bite toward the camera after landing; this consumes stamina.
Stand or perch at the water's edge, face a fish school and press G to enter the spearfishing stance.
Auto-circle while flying in the current build; check Settings if your binding conflicts with spearfishing.
Survival and environmental interactions
Latch to walls or trees for cover, but recover stamina more slowly than while standing
Wind and elevation support longer glides
Coasts have crabs and turtles but fewer takeoff lanes
Never skim water suspected to contain Deinosuchus
EInteractWallow at a mud pool to reduce tracks and scent for a while.
QScentScent while standing still to read water, diet, carcasses, tracks and distant zones.
GCarcass interactionCorpse handling: tap to tear off a chunk; hold to drag or carry it when mass allows.
HRestRest / safe logout: rest out of sight; never lie on a trail or directly between others and water.
All basic controls +
Use SHIFT to sprint and Z to switch trot or walk for tighter turns.
Hold longer for greater range; tap Q to open the compass.
Eat, drink, wallow, use nests and interact with resources.
Tap to tear off a chunk; hold to drag or carry a valid object.
Rest for faster recovery; hold H to sleep and log out safely.
View growth, diet, mutations, sex, group and asset location.
Broadcast · friendly · threaten · help. Loud calls reveal your position.
Use N to pair or place a nest; B builds a mound nest for supported species.
Damage by ability
Actual damage also depends on mass, hitbox, attack direction, bleed and server balance. The table separates fixed values from scaling abilities to avoid treating community figures as absolute damage.
Community reference for Bite; actual results still vary with mass, hitbox and server balance.
Community reference for Skim / Spearfishing; actual results still vary with mass, hitbox and server balance.
Dive contact scales with target state, mass, speed or contact conditions; use the listed value as a reference rather than guaranteed damage.
Recommended mutations
This list is the species-wide foundation. After choosing a build below, follow its dedicated loadout order instead of keeping the general priority.
Reduces stamina pressure from jumps, climbs or takeoff.
Improves stamina uptime for repeated movement and ability rotations.
Reduces how often you must visit dangerous water sources.
Restores hydration when feeding from carcasses.
Two builds & detailed guides
Choose the role you want to play in this life. These are EFG tactical recommendations, not universal meta builds for every matchup.
Long range
Fly long routes.
Take off before stamina reaches a dangerous level and land only after observing the area from above.
Choose in order from 01 → 04
Prioritize the first mutation in the list. If it is unavailable or slot-limited, use the next option and check again at the next milestone.
Slows hydration drain.
Reduces jump stamina cost and requires a jump-count unlock.
UNLOCK REQUIRED · LifestyleLowers the stamina-regeneration threshold and requires an activity unlock.
UNLOCK REQUIRED · Slot 2 or 3Restores some hydration while eating, reducing risky water visits.
TACTICAL GAMEPLAY LOOP
Catch small fish, land on a wide bank and watch for Deinosuchus.
Scout from above → choose a wide landing bank → collect food → take off with stamina in reserve → avoid extended ground combat.
Take off before stamina reaches a dangerous level and land only after observing the area from above.
CONDITIONS FOR THIS BUILD
↗Latch to walls or trees for cover, but recover stamina more slowly than while standing
↗Wind and elevation support longer glides
+You need to cross the map, scout or link distant water stops.
+Easy disengagement
−Extremely fragile
−Zero stamina is fatal
NOTE: A build guides decisions; it does not replace reading hitboxes, stamina, team numbers and server-specific settings.
Fisher
Run safer fishing loops.
Fish along a clear flight line; leave the loop as soon as the surface is contested or no safe landing bank remains.
Choose in order from 01 → 04
Prioritize the first mutation in the list. If it is unavailable or slot-limited, use the next option and check again at the next milestone.
Slows food drain for longer survival routes.
Restores some hydration while eating, reducing risky water visits.

Lowers the stamina-regeneration threshold and requires an activity unlock.
UNLOCK REQUIRED · Slot 2 or 3TACTICAL GAMEPLAY LOOP
Keep a stamina reserve for emergency takeoff.
Scout from above → choose a wide landing bank → collect food → take off with stamina in reserve → avoid extended ground combat.
Fish along a clear flight line; leave the loop as soon as the surface is contested or no safe landing bank remains.
CONDITIONS FOR THIS BUILD
↗Coasts have crabs and turtles but fewer takeoff lanes
↗Never skim water suspected to contain Deinosuchus
+Open water and a safe landing bank are available at the end of the fishing loop.
+Vision and mobility
−Zero stamina is fatal
−Landing and takeoff need space

Mutation names, unlock conditions and effects may change with hotfixes. EFG prioritizes developer data; unclear items are treated as community recommendations and should be verified against the in-game description.
Growth time, mass and diet
Pteranodon from 0% to 100%
Before Adult: one nutrient gives 100% growth speed, two give 200%, and all three give 300%. Diet does not speed up Elder ageing at 75–100%. The table assumes a 1× server.
Chicken, Hypsi, Bullfrog, Rabbit, Troodon
Schooling Fish, Crab
Sea Turtle, Psittacosaurus, Beipi, Ptera
Maintain α, β and γ together for 300% Growth. Each bar only needs a remaining value; when one reaches zero, speed immediately drops to the corresponding tier.
AI spawns by region and player/server density; spawn descriptions refer to habitat types, not guaranteed coordinates.
A tiny round ground bird that runs in a zigzag and vanishes in grass.
Near trails, forest edges and active player areas; suitable prey for juveniles.Extremely small with long ears and short bursts of speed; difficult to see in tall grass.
Grassland and forest edges; it is often noticed only after it starts running.A large, low green-brown frog that stays close to wet ground and shorelines.
Swamps, riverbanks and wet areas; search slowly along the water instead of sprinting through the zone.Flat armor and side claws, moving sideways across sand or rock.
Coasts, mudflats and very shallow water; scan along the shoreline.Small groups create ripples or moving silhouettes close to the surface.
Rivers, lakes and open water; Pteranodon and Austroraptor use fishing stances while swimmers can chase directly. An oval shell and broad flippers; larger and slower than schooling fish.
Coastal shallows near shore; locations change with server AI density.A small bipedal dinosaur with a beaked head; low to the ground and fast.
Land AI near bushes, forest edges and active players; use its call to find direction.Prime stats for Pteranodon

Peak is the comparison point above. Prime usually rises from 75%, peaks around 87.5%, then enters Elder decline. Mass, speed and Bite Force use the Prime Peak value at roughly 87.5%; hotfixes may change these stats.
From first spawn to Prime
Catch small fish, land on a wide bank and watch for Deinosuchus.
Keep a stamina reserve for emergency takeoff.
Use altitude to find zones and AI; do not dive into carcasses.
Prioritize accessible zones because Pteranodon may not always have a suitable Sanctuary.

Pteranodon was a pterosaur, not a dinosaur, and lived around North America's inland seas during the Late Cretaceous.

Reconstructing Pteranodon
A Pteranodon reconstruction by TotalDino. The form reflects the artist’s interpretation of evidence; coloration and soft tissues should not be treated as a photograph of the living animal.

The skeleton and neck detail
Pteranodon mount LACM 50926 at the Los Angeles museum and a close-up of the neck vertebrae. An arrow marks a shark tooth in the research image; this does not establish in-game flight abilities.

The long beak and crest
Pteranodon skull AMNH 7515 at the American Museum of Natural History. The image shows the beak and crest without treating gameplay skim fishing as fossil evidence.
Its name means 'toothless wing'; the large crest may have aided recognition, display or aerodynamics.
Skim fishing evokes surface feeding, but the exact controls are a game design choice.
